Colossians 4:2-6
1. Allan began with a series of questions that surround our practice of prayer, questions such as What good is prayer? Does it accomplish anything? How does prayer work? Can it affect a change in God’s purpose and/or will? Can you identify some of the questions you have about this central Christian practice?
2. “Jesus never let a day pass without seeking the direction of God”. Can you give an example of how your relationship with God has been deepened through prayer?
3. “Paul knows the tyranny of the present, the way in which current concerns and past events crowd out hope in the promise of the future. [On the other hand,] expectation flows from gratitude. As we express our thanks to God for his goodness and mercy in Jesus, our gratitude builds conviction that engenders hope. ” How do you respond to this statement?
4. Allan shared a description of what it was like to be in the presence of someone very sick and how responsive people were when the name of the Triune God is invoked; everyone in the room agreed that God was present. Have you had any situation that might mirror this?
5. “A limited focus to our prayers (around our own immediate concerns) yields a limited experience and vision of God.” What’s the alternative? How might this be reflected in our prayer lives?
6. How does prayer create a bond with the person/people you are praying for?
7. Challenge Question: Allan challenged us by saying, “Try to pray for someone without letting it change the tenor of your heart.” Have you ever been successful with this challenge? If so, describe. If not, describe why not.
